Frail Grounds - Corrosion
Reviewed by Stian Fossum in 10/31/2008
Progressive metal is starting to become a serious contender on the Norwegian metal scene, reaching from the darker and US power inspired bands such as COMMUNIC to the more European and technical versions as PAGANS MIND.
FRAIL GROUNDS have placed themselves closer to the first mentioned, and I wouldn't be surprised if NEVERMORE is one of the influences. Their first demo "Corrosion" is available now, and I'd say this is a band to be heard from later as well. The best parts of FRAIL GROUNDS is without doubt the mellower parts, where singer Morten Söbyskogen can profit on his clear vocal, and the very good guitar work throughout the demo. The songs are good shit, and even though I feel that especially the growl vocal and drums maybe are subjects to improvement, this is highly recommended for fans of the genre. That being said, the drummer isn't at all bad, but I think the production is rather lame, and I'd like mr. Moen on the drums to challenge himself and the rest of the band more. There are room for experimenting in this genre, and no point going for the safe stuff.
FRAIL GROUNDS is also busy on the live side for the moment, and I for one will be trying to check these guys out on a stage somewhere in the near future.
